Labour pledges lifeline for Rural Bus Routes.

When Labour returns to power they will give local councils the power to award local bus licences to non-profit making groups to run services.

The plan regarded as similar to its interventionist energy freeze policy, will reverse the loss of over 2000 services, particularly in rural areas. It will end the dominance of the top five private bus companies Stagecoach, Arriva, Go-Ahead, First Group and National Express who control over 70% of the market.

Thatcher who deregulated the buses in 1986, that led to the “Bus Wars”, in the late 1980’s, with private companies battling for business, within the Bus Stations

In London the Buses are controlled by Transport for London, which is part of the Mayor’s responsibility and this model would be adopted throughout the England.
