Packed selection meeting picks Newton Abbot man to represent party in ‘the most important vote for a generation’

Newton Abbot Constituency Labour Party met on Thursday 13th November in a standing-room-only Kingsteignton Parish Hall to select its candidate for the upcoming general election, plumping for Roy Freer to represent the party in May 2015.

Mr Freer, 41, is a well-known local businessman who is about to re-open the popular Market Gate pub in the centre of Newton Abbot and whose two youngest children attend school in the town.

Commenting on his selection, Mr Freer said:

“I am delighted and humbled to have been selected as Labour’s candidate for the General Election. Next year’s vote is the most important in a generation and the electors of Newton Abbot have a stark choice – more austerity and cuts with the Tories; a privatised NHS with UKIP; more broken promises with the Lib Dems or a fresh start with a Labour Party committed to governing for all, not just the privileged few.

“What is clear from the last four years of this coalition is that we are ruled by an out-of-touch London elite who care nothing for ordinary working families. Tax cuts for millionaires while thousands of families rely on food banks;  the hated Bedroom Tax; a £430million black hole in the NHS in Devon; cuts to libraries, youth centres and the police and the Lib Dem’s betrayal of students all make me incredibly angry.

“I’m proud therefore to be the person who will stand up for Labour right across the Newton Abbot constituency. I’ll take the fight to the coalition parties and talk about Ed Miliband’s positive policies, like the energy bill freeze, the ban on exploitative zero hours contracts and an elected House of Lords. I’m a local man and am looking forward to getting stuck in”.

Labour Party membership has grown by more than 10% in Newton Abbot over the last year and anyone wishing to join the party or help in the General Election campaign can make contact through the Facebook, Twitter or via the website: www.newtonabbotlabour.org.uk
